The Scale of Sweetness
Bone Dry
No sugar at all. These wines feel crisp and can even make your mouth feel a little parched. Think Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet.
A Touch of Sweet
Just a tiny bit of sugar remains. You’ll notice a fruity roundness, but it isn't "syrupy." Common in many Rieslings.
Sweet & Fruity
Noticeable sugar. These wines are easy to drink and often have lower alcohol. Great for beginners or spicy food.
Dessert Wine
Thick, rich, and very sweet. These are meant to be sipped in small glasses after a meal, like Port or Moscato.
A Guide to Wine Sweetness
Understanding the balance between acidity and residual sugar is the key to mastering your palate.
What makes a wine dry?
It all comes down to fermentation. To make wine, yeast eats the sugar in grape juice and turns it into alcohol. If the yeast eats all the sugar, the wine is “dry.” If the winemaker stops the yeast early, some sugar stays behind. That leftover sugar is called residual sugar.
Fruitiness vs. Sweetness
Don’t let your nose fool you. A wine can smell like sweet strawberries but still taste dry. This is “fruit-forward” wine. True sweetness is something you feel on the tip of your tongue. If the tip of your tongue tingles, there is likely real sugar in the glass.

Crisp & Pristine
These wines undergo complete fermentation, leaving no sugar behind. The result is a sharp, clean finish that highlights the wine’s natural minerality.
Subtle & Nuanced
A delicate balance where a hint of sugar remains. This softens the acidity and brings out a lush, velvet-like quality without feeling heavy.
Rich & Expressive
Purposefully crafted with higher sugar levels, these wines offer an approachable, fruit-forward experience that lingers beautifully on the palate.
Opulent & Concentrated
The pinnacle of sweetness. Intense, nectar-like flavors designed to be savored slowly, often as a sophisticated conclusion to a meal.
